The ancient custom of binding women’s feet, to make them small (and thus attractive) survived for many of thousands of years.
Bound tightly, often from birth, the constrictive nature of this custom can, I think, be compared to one’s internal ‘self’ – admired by many, outwardly attractive, but the inner self can be bound, constricted and held tightly. The pain can manifest in it’s many forms and a casual observer may not notice unless that binding is released. Then, and only then, can the long term effects of constriction become obvious to other.
